Article Summary: Why Write Blog Posts for Your Website?

  • Blogging can improve Google rankings, but simply publishing articles doesn’t guarantee results.

  • Answer real customer questions. Write about problems your potential customers want solved.

  • Choose relevant topics. Focus on your services, customers, and local market.

  • Quality matters more than quantity. A few useful articles can outperform dozens of poorly written posts.

  • Use your own experience. Original information and practical examples make articles more valuable.

  • Write for people first. Make articles clear, helpful, and easy to understand.

  • Blog with a purpose. The goal isn’t just more website traffic. It’s attracting potential customers.

Bottom line: Don’t blog just because someone told you Google likes blogs. Publish articles that help your customers and give them a reason to contact your business.

Why Write Blog Posts When Google Won’t Give You Points For Blogs?

You’ve been told you need a blog for your website. By blog I mean writing and posting a whole lot of articles generally about your business services.

Honestly blogging can help you rank higher in Google search.

Creating a blog just because, doesn’t do much to move the needle. The big question is, “Is your blog information helpful to people that visit your website?”

Your website should have information that’s useful to people looking for your products or services.

For example, if you own an air-conditioning company in St. George, an article about why an AC struggles during a 110-degree summer day could be useful.

The history of air-conditioning might be fascinating, but it’s probably not what someone wants to read when their AC quits on a 110-degree afternoon. A blog post doesn’t help the customer in this situation.

More Articles Don’t Automatically Mean Better Rankings Either

Don’t fall into the trap of publishing more articles just because you think Google wants them. Ten useful, information dense articles, can be worth more than fifty that barely answer anyone’s questions.

In fact 50 “thin content” articles may end up getting your site penalized by Google.

Also be careful about publishing several articles that answer basically the same question. One thorough, useful article is usually better than several that repeat the same information.

Don’t blog because your SEO person told you that you should. Blog to share information that would help website visitors.

For example, I am constantly trying to reduce the fluff on my sites by deleting article sections, sentences, or ideas that don’t fit.

Now to answer the question of writing good blog articles…

1. Write Excellent Articles That Can Answer Real Customer Questions

A good blogging article answers questions or provides information your potential customers are looking for.

Questions like:

* How much will this cost?

* Should I repair it or replace it?

* Do I need to be home when you arrive?

A person searching on Google for answers to their questions might land on your webpage article. They should be able to learn what they want to know and be introduced to your business and the services you offer at the same time.

2. Write Blog Articles About Unique or Unusual Ideas About Your Business That Get Attention From Your Readers

When a customer opens your website, your main service pages should explain what you do. But customers often have questions your service pages don’t answer.

That’s where blog articles can come in.

For example, a landscaping company’s lawn-care page might explain its services. But, separate articles could answer questions about watering schedules, brown spots, weeds, fertilizer, or keeping a lawn alive during a Southern Utah summer.

Given enough articles you will eventually have a solid selection of information that complements the service or location pages on your website.

3. Answer basic questions, like easy to find contact information

For example a service page on a window cleaning website might be about the steps the company takes to clean a window. A blog article might talk about the 5 best DYI towels to use when cleaning windows.

Here are some basic questions you will need to provide answers to:

A. Be sure your service pages clearly explain what your business does.

B. Make certain your contact information is easy to find. I run into so many websites where you have to hunt to find a phone number. That’s not good.

C. Which areas you serve.

So, Is Blogging Worth It for a Local Business That Wants More Customers?

Yes, when you have something useful to say. And yes, good blog articles can help you rank higher in search results.

If those blog articles also bring people to your website, even better.

How to Write an SEO Blog Post: 13 Key Tips By Semrush

“Writing an SEO blog post used to mean one thing: optimizing for Google.
But the search landscape has changed dramatically because of AI.

Today, people also search for information using AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. Even Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode use AI to generate direct answers to user queries.

That means your blog post needs to rank in traditional search results and appear in AI answers.”

Article summary by ChatGPT:

Summary: How to Write an SEO Blog Post (13 Key Tips)

The Semrush article, updated January 7, 2026, explains how to write blog posts that perform well in Google Search and have a better chance of appearing in AI-generated answers.

Here are its 13 recommendations, simplified for small business owners.

1. Choose a primary keyword.

Identify what potential customers are searching for. Include related questions and phrases.

2. Understand search intent.

Figure out what readers actually want to know and make sure your article answers their questions.

3. Write useful, well-organized content.

Start with the reader’s problem, provide direct answers, use descriptive subheadings, and keep paragraphs short.

4. Keep information current.

Update outdated articles with accurate, relevant information rather than publishing new content unnecessarily.

5. Use keywords naturally.

Include your main keyword in the title, introduction, and relevant sections. Avoid repeating it excessively.

6. Include images and videos.

Relevant photographs, illustrations, and videos can improve the reading experience. Avoid slowing down your website.

7. Write compelling title tags.

Make titles descriptive, interesting, and relevant to the search. Include your primary keyword.

8. Create useful meta descriptions.

Explain what readers will learn and give them a reason to click. Meta descriptions aren’t a direct ranking factor.

9. Include an author biography.

Explain who wrote the article and why that person has experience or knowledge about the subject.

10. Add expert insights.

Include firsthand experience, expert opinions, and credible sources to make the article more valuable.

11. Support claims with statistics.

Use reliable, relevant numbers and link to original research when appropriate.

12. Include internal links.

Link to related pages on your website that help readers learn more about the subject.

13. Use short, descriptive URLs.

Keep URLs readable, relevant, and reasonably short. Include the primary keyword when practical.

What I Consider Most Important

Answer a real customer question. Don’t write an article simply because you need another blog post.

Make the title promise a benefit. Tell readers what problem the article will help them solve.

Answer the main question early. Don’t make readers wade through 300 words of introduction.

Include firsthand experience. Real examples from operating a business can distinguish your content from generic AI-generated articles.

Link to relevant service pages. Give readers a logical next step when they’re ready to hire someone.

One Thing I Would Add to Semrush’s Advice:

Every blog post should have a clear purpose beyond attracting traffic.

For a local service business, that purpose might be helping a potential customer make a decision, understand a service, or decide whether to contact you.

A blog post that attracts 50 local visitors who might become customers can be more valuable than one attracting 5,000 visitors who will never use your services.

The central takeaway: Good SEO blogging is still about answering people’s questions with useful, trustworthy information. AI search hasn’t changed that fundamental principle.
